2012 Presentation Night and Christmas Party

Thank you to Lucy Mandarano for organising our annual Christmas Party at Asquith Bowling Club on Saturday evening.

Our Patron, State MP for Hornsby Matt Kean attended to present the club trophies to the bowlers ... and he also presented a cheque for $10,000 - a very generous and very welcome donation from the Minister for Disability Services, Andrew Constance, towards the cost of sending a team to the Australian Disability Championship in Canberra in June, 2013.  Our grateful thanks to the Minister, and to Matt for supporting our application.

National Disabilities Championship: Canberra, June 2013.

  • Members will have recently received a request for expressions of interest from Hornsby Rockets members in the National Disabilities Championship in Canberra in 2013. Please return them by 17th November.

Tenpin Bowling Australia media release, 1 November 2012:

Who is that team in black and red chosen by TBA to help illustrate the announcement of the unified National Disabilities Championship in 2013?

Following detailed discussions and planning, Tenpin Bowling Australia Limited (TBA) and Australian Disabilities Tenpin Inc. (ADT) are pleased to announce the staging of a unified National Disabilities Championship in Canberra in June 2013.

For several years, each organisation has staged its own National Championship and the affiliation is designed to provide the best outcomes and benefits for people with a disability and the sport of tenpin bowling throughout Australia.

In July 2012, TBA established a joint management committee (JMC) to oversee the unification and provide a framework to develop the best experiences and competition opportunities for bowlers with a disability.

“This move is a wonderful step forward for the sport of bowling in Australia,” said TBA’s National Inclusion Coordinator, Matthew Dunstan. “Although there is still a lot of work to do and logistics to manage, the decision by TBA and ADT to come together is a historic one. The JMC is committed to ensuring the work that has been going on for a number of years will continue to develop and grow,” he said.

TBA CEO Cara Honeychurch commented, “Both organisations have run very successful championships for many years for bowlers with a disability and we are excited to be joining forces to make the combined championship even more successful in 2013 and beyond. I would like to thank and acknowledge the ADT Board for agreeing to a unified championship where the winners will undoubtedly be the extensive number of bowlers with a disability throughout the country.”

The Chairman of ADT Michael Cooke added, “The unification of the National Disabilities Championships is something that I and the Board of the Australian Disabilities Tenpin Inc have been working towards for many years. I am pleased we have been able to come to an agreement with TBA to run a unified championship that will benefit all bowlers with a disability and improve the opportunities for participation in a sport that only focuses on their ability and not on what they cannot do’.

The combined National Disabilities Championship will be held from 8-15 June 2013 at AMF Tuggeranong Bowl in the ACT. Further tournament information will be announced shortly by the JMC which has established a contact list for all stakeholders to provide tournament updates.

Challenge Night 2012 ... thanks, and some photos

The Rockets kicked off proceedings with an impressive list of achievements
in competition over the last year, laying down the challenge for the night's bowling - taken up by 78 bowlers.

Berowra Probus Club joined us again, as did our Patron, local  MP Matt Kean and
staff from his Hornsby Electorate office.

Other teams included family and friends - not all of them as experienced bowlers as the Rockets!

Matt Kean wrapped up the evening, and presented the trophies,
including to the Peters family team who successfully defended their 2011 title.
Congratulations to (from left) Megan, Jacob, Anna and John Peters, Adam Mandarano, and Karina Peters, with Matt Kean.

Hornsby Rockets in TBA reports on the 2012 Australian Disabilities Championship

Hornsby Rockets have featured in two reports about the recent national championships in Hobart, published by Tenpin Bowling Australia:

Our home bowling alley, AMF Hornsby submitted this report.

And Georgie's lovely smile lights up the TBA's own news item (and it looks like a couple of Rockets are in the background).

“Tenpin Bowling Australia is committed to growing participation in the sport for people with a disability as well as continuing to grow events such as the TBA National Disability Championships ,” stated Tenpin Bowling Australia CEO, Cara Honeychurch.

“We are truly excited about the future of the sport for people with a disability and this is a strong focus area for Tenpin Bowling Australia moving forward,” she said.

More photos from Tasmania

Mount Wellington

In the morning, the road to the pinnacle was closed - this is about half way up.
It was cold and windy (ask Karina and Adam!) ...

... but clear and sunny, and you could still see the magnificent view over Hobart and the Derwent.
Look at the brilliant colour of the sky behind Natham and Lesley.

Later in the afternoon the road to the pinnacle was open, so up we went.
Tim and Denis are bracing again the ferocious wind, it is slippery and much, much colder than lower down. You really did have to hold onto your hat.  We were not out of the buses for very long!

Thanks for your photos Anna

There was much to see and many animals to hand-feed at ZooDoo.

Thanks for your photos, Ron

Tasmania - when we were not bowling ...

There was a LOT of bowling at the Nationals (as you would expect), but we had some free days for sightseeing.  There is so much to see in and around Hobart that we could only take a sample ...

The Mercure on Bathurst Street, Hobart looked after us very well - thank you!

We had to drop into the Cadbury plant - what do you think is those purple bags?

It was chilly, but fine most days. There was snow on Mt Wellington - at the pinnacle we were nearly blown away by the Roaring Forties, and it was much, much colder!

The Cascade brewery is on a historic site ...

... and incorporates a beautiful garden.

This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license.
We also visited the fabulous Tahune Air Walk in the Huon Valley (above), Bellerive Oval, Old Hobart Town, Salamanca Markets, and Zoodoo Wildlife Park.

Thanks Lesley for organising the sightseeing, to Ron and Denis for driving us to so many interesting and fun places, and to Natham for the photos.

2012 TBA National Disabilities Championships

29 Hornsby Rockets bowlers, parents and carers travelled to Tasmania for the 2012 TBA National Disabilities Championships held in Hobart from 23rd - 29th June.

Our thanks go to Annette Seymour, Lesley Constable, Natham Constable and Ron Crompton for all of the organising, planning, time and effort that they put into making the trip possible, smooth running, comfortable and fun.  They organised the competition aspects, travel, accommodation, meals, sightseeing and safety of all 29 travellers.  In addition, Ron and Denis Wilson drove the buses to transport us around Hobart, to and from competition, many kms for sightseeing, dinners out and home safely.  We really appreciate it all.

The bowlers competed in two series each of singles, doubles and teams, and six bowlers were members of the NSW State team as well (so that each bowler could win more than one medal in each event, and sometimes did!)

Hornsby Rockets members who also bowled for the NSW State Team:
Emma Crompton, Karina Peters, Jenny Jones, Tim WIlson, Warren Seymour and Candice Lundie
